Located in the vibrant coastal district of Shekou in Shenzhen, the Sea World Culture and Arts Center is one of the city’s most important cultural landmarks. The complex was designed by renowned Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
Opened in 2017, the center serves as a multidisciplinary cultural hub that combines art exhibitions, design galleries, educational spaces and public terraces overlooking Shenzhen Bay. It is operated in partnership with the Victoria and Albert Museum through the V&A Gallery, the first international museum partnership of its kind in China.

Cultural institutions and exhibition spaces:

Design Society : a platform for contemporary design exhibitions and creative education
V&A Gallery : presenting exhibitions from the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum
Main Exhibition Hall : temporary exhibitions featuring international artists, designers and architects
Public Art Spaces and Rooftop Terraces : offering views of Shenzhen Bay and the surrounding harbor

Spatial Design

The architecture of the Sea World Culture and Arts Center reflects the maritime identity of the Shekou waterfront. The building consists of three stacked white volumes that appear to float above the ground, creating shaded public plazas beneath them. Large glass façades bring natural light into the galleries, while terraces and rooftop gardens connect the building with the surrounding sea and city skyline.
