Located on scenic Hailing Island, the Guangdong Maritime Silk Road Museum tells the fascinating story of ancient maritime trade connecting China to Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
The museum is built around the extraordinary discovery of the Nanhai No.1 Shipwreck, a merchant ship from the Southern Song Dynasty (12th–13th century) that was recovered from the seabed after more than 800 years.
The museum features three main sections:
- Nanhai No.1 Shipwreck Exhibition Hall one of the best-preserved ancient merchant ships ever discovered
- Underwater Archaeology Observation Hall
- Maritime Silk Road History Gallery thousands of recovered artifacts including ceramics, coins and trade goods

The museum’s architecture evokes the shape of a ship emerging from the sea.
Large observation galleries allow visitors to look directly into the excavation tank where archaeologists continue to uncover artifacts from the ancient vessel.
