Yao Culture of Shaoguan

Northern Shaoguan is home to one of southern China's largest Yao communities, concentrated in Ruyuan Yao Autonomous County. Recognized as one of China's oldest ethnic minorities, the Yao have preserved a rich cultural heritage expressed through colorful traditional dress, intricate embroidery, folk songs, festivals, and a close relationship with the surrounding mountains.

The center of Ruyuan is an excellent starting point for exploring Yao heritage. It is also regarded as the hometown of the Guoshan Yao, one of the most important branches of the Yao people. Visitors can learn more about their history and traditions at the Guoshan Yao Museum, before venturing into the surrounding countryside.

Just a short drive away, Bibei Yao Village offers a glimpse into traditional Yao architecture and rural life, with stone houses, ancestral customs, and a peaceful mountain setting. Together, Rucheng, the Guoshan Yao Museum, and Bibei provide one of the best introductions to Yao culture in Guangdong.

Shaoguan's Hakka Heritage

Shaoguan also preserves an important Hakka legacy. The Hakka literally "guest families" : are a subgroup of the Han Chinese whose successive migrations from northern China shaped a distinctive culture known for its strong clan identity, communal traditions, and defensive architecture.

Across northern Guangdong, this heritage is reflected in impressive 围屋 walled villagesbuilt to protect entire extended families. Among the finest examples is Mantang Walled Village, often regarded as the largest and best-preserved Hakka fortified compound in Guangdong. Its massive walls, watchtowers, courtyards, and hundreds of interconnected rooms illustrate the remarkable engineering of traditional Hakka settlements.

Another outstanding example is Chang'an Wei, a beautifully preserved Hakka walled village that showcases the symmetrical layout, ancestral halls, and fortified design characteristic of Lingnan Hakka architecture. Together, Mantang and Chang'an Wei offer fascinating insights into the history, resilience, and communal way of life that continue to define Hakka culture in northern Guangdong.
