The Yao People

The Yao are one of China's oldest ethnic groups, with a history of thousands of years. They mainly live in the mountains of southern China, including Guangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, and Yunnan. There is a Chinese saying: "Where there are mountains, there are Yao people."瑢族村民.jpg

Because the Yao have many different branches, they have different languages, traditional clothing, and customs. In the past, the Yao did not have a unified writing system. Their culture was passed down by word of mouth, and Chinese characters were later used to record songs and religious texts.

The Yao are well known for their singing and dancing. Their beautiful embroidery, colorful traditional clothing, folk songs, the Long Drum Dance, and the Bronze Drum Dance are all important parts of Yao culture and are still preserved today.

Guoshan Yao

The Guoshan Yao (Crossing-the-Mountains Yao) are one of the main branches of the Yao people. They are the best-known Yao community in Shaoguan and mainly live in Ruyuan Yao Autonomous County, one of Guangdong Province's three ethnic autonomous counties. Ruyuan is known as the "Home of the World's Guoshan Yao."

The name Guoshan Yao comes from their history of moving across mountains in search of new places to live. Living in the Nanling Mountains has shaped their unique culture and traditions.

The Guoshan Yao have preserved many traditional customs and intangible cultural heritage. Embroidery, traditional clothing, the Long Drum Dance, and folk songs are among their most famous cultural traditions. Girls begin learning embroidery from a young age and make their own wedding clothes and decorations. During festivals, people wear traditional costumes, sing, and dance together to celebrate their culture.
