De’an Li is the family compound of Fang Yao 方耀 , a prominent Admiral of the Guangdong Navy during the late Qing Dynasty. The sight has a history of over 150 years with a construction that began in 1871. In the recent years, the village has attracted numerous film and television productions due to its unique historical atmosphere and beautiful architectural setting.

The complex covers an area of 63,000m² with a building area of 32,000m², containing nearly 800 rooms.
It is considered as an open-air museum of Chaoshan architectural art.

The space layout is divided in 3 sections :

  • Old village, the central Fang family ancestral hall that represents the phoenix, while the surrounding 100 residential houses symbolize the hundred birds paying homage to him.
  • Middle village and New village, as the same as for Chen Cihong Residence in Shantou, they follow the 4 horses pulling a cart pattern 驷马拖车, continuing the architectural tradition of the region.

Moreover, walking through De‘an Li, you can admire masterpieces of wood & stone carving as well as Chaoshan's local embedded porcelain.
