Built during the Ming Dynasty in 1385, the walled city was established as an important military stronghold to defend the coastline against pirate raids and foreign invasions. Today, it offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into more than 600 years of history, traditional architecture, and local culture.
Often referred to as the Living Ancient City of Southern Guangdong, Pinghai remains home to local residents, allowing visitors to experience both historical heritage and everyday life within its ancient walls.
Massive stone walls, ancient gates, watchtowers, and military structures were built to protect the region from coastal threats, helping the city to become an important commercial and cultural center, attracting merchants, fishermen, and travelers from across southern China over the centuries.
Nowadays, visitors can stroll through narrow stone streets lined with traditional Lingnan-style houses, ancestral halls, temples, and old shops. The city retains much of its original layout, creating an authentic atmosphere rarely found in modern urban areas.
Unlike many restored heritage sites, Pinghai Ancient City remains a living community. Local markets, family-run businesses, and traditional customs continue to thrive within the historic setting.
Its proximity to the coast also makes it an excellent destination for travelers interested in combining cultural exploration with nearby beaches and seaside scenery.
