This symmetrically designed complex combines :
- Ancient northern Chinese castle architecture
- Traditional 四合院 Siheyuan courtyard homes
- Classic Hakka fortified residential design
Unlike Fujian tulou, Guangdong Hakka walled villages functioned as true defensive strongholds. Often having a single main entrance but multiple defensive gates, observation holes and firing ports throughout the structure.
The four corner towers were built like military bastions, which strenghten the atmospher of a fortified castle.
