Yuecheng Longmu Ancestral Temple is one of the most important folk religious sites in Lingnan and among the oldest temples in southern China. Located in Yuecheng Town, Deqing County, Zhaoqing, along the banks of the Xijiang River, the temple has stood for more than 2,000 years, making it a major symbol of regional spiritual heritage.
Yuecheng Longmu Ancestral Temple stands as both a sacred pilgrimage site and a masterpiece of southern Chinese religious architecture.
About the Dragon Mother
The temple is dedicated to 龙母 (Longmu) the Dragon Mother, a legendary woman named Wen Shi who, according to local folklore, raised five baby dragons as her own children. In return for her kindness and maternal devotion, the dragons protected her and later became symbols of power, prosperity, and filial piety.

Over time, Longmu became a symbol of motherhood, protection, wisdom, and prosperity. She is widely worshipped by families, merchants, and river communities who pray for blessings, health, success, and safe journeys. Her cult remains particularly strong along the Xijiang River, especially in Guangdong and Guangxi where dragon worship has deep historical roots.
About the Temple
Originally established during the Qin-Han period, the temple has been rebuilt and expanded over multiple dynasties. Today’s architectural complex is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Lingnan temple architecture, renowned for its extraordinary craftsmanship in stone carving, brick carving, wood carving, ceramic decoration, and lime sculpture.
One of the temple’s most remarkable features is how its architecture adapts to the river environment. Built in a flood-prone area near the Xijiang, the structure incorporates elevated granite foundations and sophisticated drainage systems designed to withstand seasonal flooding. Visitors entering the temple pass through richly decorated ceremonial spaces, including the main gate, incense pavilion, and worship halls filled with elaborate dragon motifs. The temple’s sculptural details are particularly impressive : stone pillars wrapped with dragons, intricate relief carvings, and decorative roof ridges all reinforce the strong symbolism of dragon worship.
Beyond its architectural significance, the temple remains an active center of devotion. Every year, the Dragon Mother Festival, celebrated during the fifth lunar month, attracts thousands of worshippers who come to pray for blessings, prosperity, family harmony, and protection.
The celebrations include ceremonies, incense offerings, and traditional performances, making it one of the most vibrant folk religious events in Guangdong.
