Hidden deep in the mountains of northern Guangdong, Bibei Yao Village offers an authentic glimpse into the traditions of the Yao ethnic minority. Located (50 km northeast from Rucheng) within Ruyuan Yao Autonomous County, Bibei Yao Village is one of several culturally rich destinations in the region, while Rucheng Town, the county’s administrative center, serves as the main gateway for exploring northern Guangdong’s Yao heritage and mountain landscapes.

Village Landscape

The village’s distinctive feature is its traditional Yao stilt houses, built along the mountain slopes. These wooden houses are elevated above the ground to improve ventilation and protect against humidity, while their layered arrangement creates a hillside landscape. The village is crossed by the clear Yangxi River, with stone bridges connecting different sections of the settlement. Black-tiled roofs, wooden façades, and red ceremonial decorations create a striking contrast against the surrounding green mountains.

Highlights & Cultural Experience

Bibei is best known for preserving Yao traditions that remain alive especially long-drum performances, folk songs, ceremonial dances, and local handicrafts that reflect generations of cultural transmission.

The village is also famous for Yao embroidery and silver ornaments, both important elements of traditional dress. During festivals, locals wear colorful ceremonial clothing that showcases intricate craftsmanship and symbolic motifs.
