The Sacred Heart Cathedral of Guangzhou is one of the rare churches in the world built entirely of stone, standing alongside Notre-Dame de Paris,
Westminster Abbey, and Cologne Cathedral
Locally known as 石室, the “Stone House”, it is one of the most iconic landmarks in Guangzhou and a National Key Cultural Heritage Site.

Spatial Design

Unlike many churches that combine materials, this cathedral is built entirely from granite, showcasing extraordinary craftsmanship and durability.
Seen from above, the cathedral forms a perfect Gothic Latin cross, stretching across Yide Road, an impressive architectural sight rarely visible at street level.

Beyond its European Gothic design, subtle Chinese elements appear throughout, such as stone lion motifs on rooftop drainage spouts or traditional Guangdong bricks used in flooring. These details reflect the wish to blend Western religious architecture with local craftsmanship.
