A labyrinth of 506 rooms to explore overseas Chinese lifestyle in Lingnan

Known as 岭南第一侨宅, the "Best Overseas Chinese Residence in Lingnan", Chen Cihong's Former Residence (also called the Chen Shangli Family Mansion) is probably the rarest gem of overseas Chinese architecture in China .
Construction began in the late Qing Dynasty and continued for nearly half a century, spanning three generations. The complex includes multiple residences such as Langzhongdi (郎中第) and Shoukangli (寿康里) , containing a total of 506 halls and rooms .

Overseas Chinese Legacy

The residence is a "living museum" of Chaoshan overseas Chinese culture, reflecting the wealth and taste of Teochew emigrants who returned from Southeast Asia. With its twisting corridors, multiple levels, and interconnected courtyards, visitors easily get lost which also makes the charm of the place

"Four Horses Pulling a Cart" Layout (驷马拖车)

In the same way as the middle and new village areas of De'an Li Mansion in Jieyang, the residence follows the traditional Chaoshan architectural pattern : a central courtyard flanked by two lanes on each side, but fused with Western-style villas, pavilions, covered walkways, and sky bridges.

Shanjushi (善居室) : The Masterpiece

The most representative building in the entire complex, Shanjushi was started in 1922 and continued until 1939 , when the Japanese army captured Shantou, leaving it unfinished.
It covers 6,861 square meters and contains 202 halls and rooms , making it the largest, most exquisitely designed, and best-preserved of all the Chen family residences .
