Formed over more than 170 million years, the cave stretches for approximately 500m and showcases a remarkable underground world of stalactites, stalagmites, stone curtains, and crystal-clear pools.
Its name, meaning Coiling Dragon Cave comes from the winding shape of the limestone cavern, which resembles a dragon twisting beneath the earth. As visitors follow the illuminated pathways, they encounter a succession of impressive chambers filled with naturally sculpted rock formations that have been shaped drop by drop over millions of years.
One of the cave's most distinctive features is its extraordinary concentration of secondary carbonate formations, including towering stalagmites, delicate soda straws, flowstones, and translucent calcite curtains (many formations have been given poetic names inspired by Chinese mythology and folklore).
Beyond its beauty, Panlong Cave is an important geological site that illustrates the long process of karst formation in southern China. The cave provides valuable insight into how underground rivers gradually dissolved the limestone, creating one of Guangdong's finest cave systems.
