During the First Opium War (1839–1842), Weiyuan Fort became one of the main battlegrounds between Chinese and British forces. The site witnessed several important naval engagements and remains a powerful reminder of China's struggle to defend its sovereignty. Visitors can nowadays explore well-preserved ramparts, gun emplacements, stone walls, and historic artillery positions overlooking the estuary.

The elevated location provides excellent views of passing ships, the Pearl River Estuary, and the nearby Humen Bridge, creating a unique combination of history and scenery.
