Also known as Yuyin Shanfang this over 150 years Chinese garden was built (1867-1871) by Wu Bin 邬彬, a successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations during the Qing Dynasty, who later served as an official in the Ministry of Justice.
The place is one of revered Four Great Gardens of Guangdong, standing alongside Keyuan Garden in Dongguan, Liang's Garden and Qinghui Garden in Foshan. The garden's elegant courtyard and period architecture have made it a popular filming location for Chinese historic dramas ; the most notable production is probably the movie Bodyguards and Assassins .
It initially covered only three mu (= 1,598 km² / 0.16 ha). While it is the smallest of the 4 great gardens, it is also the best-preserved one, every square inch is utilized. Its design principle, 缩龙成寸,藏而不露 litteraly "shrunken dragon, hidden artistry", explains how Wu Bin ingeniously built a landscape that feels much larger than it actually is.
In 1922, the Yu garden 瑜园 area was added by later family generations for the use of women's quarters.
Highlights
Red-Washing, Green-Crossing Bridge
This is the signature landmark of Yuyin Shanfang.
This short covered bridge is the central element that divides the garden into two distinct realms : the western section focuses on Shenliu Hall, while the eastern section encompasses Linglong Water Pavilion.

### Windows & Ceilings
The garden is also a museum of the Manchuria window, a style of colorful stained-glass that was a status symbol among Lingnan gentry in the late Qing period. At Wopiao House, the blue-glass windows create the optical illusion of viewing winter snows or red autumn leaves depending on how many layers of glass you look through.

Over the main hall, you can also discover an intricately carved wooden ceiling panel featuring a central coiling dragon surrounded by four corner qilin (Chinese mythological creature) holding an imperial edict.
