Chang’an Wei is one of the most remarkable examples of traditional Hakka fortified architecture in northern Guangdong. Located in Jiangwei Town, Wengyuan County, Shaoguan, this historic walled compound reflects the Hakka community’s long history of migration, resilience, and strong clan-based living.

The word Wei 围 refers to a fortified enclosure surrounded by defensive walls, a characteristic feature of many Hakka settlements.

Spatial Design

Unlike ordinary villages, these compounds were designed to protect entire clans from bandits, conflict, and social unrest while maintaining a highly organized communal lifestyle.

Built according to traditional feng shui principles, Chang’an Wei combines security with architectural harmony. Its thick perimeter walls, controlled entrances, and carefully planned layout demonstrate how Hakka communities adapted architecture to both practical and cultural needs. Inside the compound, residential quarters, shared courtyards, and ancestral halls create a space centered around family unity and collective identity.

What makes Chang’an Wei particularly interesting is its distinctive northern Guangdong style. While sharing similarities with other Hakka defensive structures such as Fujian’s tulou, its rectangular layout and fortress-like appearance give it a unique regional character.

Beyond its architectural value, Chang’an Wei offers insight into Hakka culture itself remaining an important cultural heritage site in the Shaoguan region and offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into the architectural and social traditions that shaped Hakka life for generations.
