On the border between Guangdong and Jiangxi Province, the Meiguan Ancient Road is one of southern China’s most important historical mountain routes.

Surrounded by forested mountains and historic stone pathways, the site remains one of northern Guangdong’s most remarkable cultural heritage landscapes.

## A Gateway Into Lingnan
### Historical roots

The pass was originally developed during the Tang Dynasty and later expanded during the Song and Ming periods. Before modern highways and railways, all the travelers between central plains of China and southern provinces had to pass through this mountainous corridor, so for more than 1000 years the ancient road witnessed imperial officials as well as merchants, poets and soldiers.

Because of its importance, Meiguan played a crucial role in trade, migration, military campaigns and cultural exchange and became one of the main gateways into Lingnan culture.

Nowadays visits

Today, visitors can still walk along sections of historical markers such as mountain stairways, ancient stone-paved roads and gate structures. The most famous landmark of the road is the historic Meiguan Pass Gate, which once marked the boundary between provinces and imperial administrative regions.
The area is also famous for its plum blossom scenery during winter that over hikers attract tones of photographers and nature lovers across China.

The Meiguan Ancient Route is an accessible experience that combines natural scenery with deep historical significance.
