About Madame Xian

Born in 522 into the powerful Xian clan, the ruling family of the Li people in what is now Maoming, Madame Xian 冼英 was a born leader. As a young woman, she rode and shot better than most men, and she had the rare ability to unite warring tribes through wisdom rather than force.

### A Strategic Marriage
In 535 AD, she married Feng Bao, a Han official whose family had lost influence among the local Li people. The union was a masterstroke: Feng Bao brought imperial legitimacy and Madame Xian brought the loyalty of the Li. Together, they bridged the divide between Han and indigenous peoples, a partnership that would define her life‘s work.

Loyal accross 3 Dynasties

China collapsed and reformed around her, yet Madame Xian remained steadfast, not to any single emperor, but to the principle of national unity.

Liang : she crushed a rebellion that sought to split Guangdong from the court.
Chen : when rebels held her son hostage, she refused to betray the dynasty, led her own army, and saved him.
Sui : after the Chen fell, she accepted the new dynasty, ensuring a peaceful transition for Lingnan

Reclaiming Hainan

For 600 years, Hainan Island had been effectively lost to direct Chinese rule. Using her prestige among Li chiefs across the strait, Madame Xian petitioned the emperor to re-establish a formal administration. In the 520s, Ya Prefecture 崖州 was created, bringing Hainan back into the Chinese fold.

Late in life, she gathered her children before three sets of imperial gifts from three different dynasties and declared:

唯用一好心 I have served three sovereigns with only one good heart.

This phrase captures her essence : unwavering loyalty not to any ruler, but to the people‘s welfare and the integrity of the realm.

### Enduring Legacy
She died around 602 AD and was buried in her hometown. Her tomb is a National Key Cultural Relic. Over 2,500 temples across southern China and Southeast Asia honour her as a goddess. Premier Zhou Enlai called her the n° 1 Heroine in Chinese History.

The Three Xian Sites

The soul of this cultural tourism area lies in its Three Xian group of heritage sites : a unique and unparalleled historical treasure trove comparable to the Three Confucius sites in the north. These three remarkable sites are located close to each other, allowing you to explore the core of her life in a single visit :

  • 冼府 Xian Fu : her family home, where she was born and lived as a child.
  • 冼墓 Xian Mu : her magnificent tomb and a protected historical site.
  • 冼庙 Xian Miao : the ancient Niangniang Temple, where she is venerated as a goddess.

冼墓 Xian Mu : The Majestic Tomb

The Tomb of Lady Xian is the most hallowed ground in the entire attraction. The installation's grandeur reflects her status as a Sui Dynasty duchess.
The massive brick structure is one of the first well-preserved Sui and Tang Dynasty tomb gardens to be discovered in Lingnan , a find of immense historical importance.

Before the main tomb, you will notice a peculiar carved stone resting on the grass. It resembles a giant stone turtle, but it is actually a Bìxì, the mythical son of the Dragon known for its strength and ability to carry heavy burdens. This massive stone monument originally held up a giant stone tablet commemorating the deeds of the tomb's occupant.
Its presence here is a testament to her supreme status, a privilege reserved for only the most powerful figures.

冼庙 Xian Miao : The Niangniang Temple

Just beyond the tomb lies the ancient Niangniang Temple, where the earthly legend transcends into the celestial. Its name, Niangniang is an intimate term that means Grand Madam, a term of deep familial respect reserved for a beloved and powerful female elder.
It is said to be the only temple in the entire world that uses this specific name.

This site is an active temple where local villagers and people from all over China and the world come to pay homage. The temple's origins are ancient, with the external walls showing layers of stonework from the Sui, Tang, Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties.

The interior is a testament to her divinity, featuring her central statue flanked by two loyal generals. You can still see the five stone inscriptions from the Qing Dynasty on the inner walls. The temple is a classic example of a Chinese traditional courtyard structure, showing remarkable longevity. In the courtyard, you might notice an ancient stone well known as the Niangniang Well or Lady Xian Well , (legend holds that Madame Xian herself used this very source of water).

冼府 Xian Fu : The Birthplace

The area known as Dingcun is where the Xian family's former residence once stood. This is the site of her childhood home, the humble heart of the Xian group of sites.
It is the least visually imposing of the three, but the one that feels the most intimately connected to her early life.
