Deqing Confucian Academy is the oldest preserved Confucian temple in Lingnan. Located in Deqing County, Zhaoqing, this historic academy offers a rare glimpse into the educational, philosophical, and architectural traditions that shaped imperial China for centuries.

History and Architecture

Originally built in 1011 during the Northern Song Dynasty, the academy was first located east of the old walled city before being relocated to its current site in 1081. It was later destroyed by flooding in 1264 and rebuilt in 1297 during the Yuan Dynasty. Today, it stands as one of the rare examples of Song-Yuan architectural heritage still preserved in Guangdong.

The architectural complex covers approximately 3,900 m² and follows the traditional north–south ceremonial axis typical of Confucian academies.

The heart of the complex is the impressive Dacheng Hall , the academy’s main ceremonial building dedicated to Confucius.
What makes it special is its sophisticated structural engineering.

One of its most famous features is the unusual four pillars without reaching the roof design. The four central wooden columns stop below the ceiling rather than supporting the roof directly, relying instead on a highly complex bracket system to distribute the building’s weight. These columns, known as Leigong Pillars 雷公柱 , create an innovative interior space.

More than a historical monument, Deqing Confucian Academy embodies the enduring influence of Confucian thought in Guangdong. It stands as a symbol of scholarship, ritual, and respect for education, values that profoundly shaped Chinese society for centuries.
