If Jieyang has a literary temple, the Confucius Temple, then Gurong Wu Miao is its military counterpart. Together, these two national treasures form the complete spiritual and historical core of this ancient Chaoshan city .

Gurong Wu Miao, commonly known as 关帝寺庙 the Guandi Temple, is dedicated to Guan Yu, the legendary general deified as the God of War.

About Guan Yu

Guan Yu (160–220 CE) was a historical general serving Liu Bei during China's Three Kingdoms period, who for over 1800 years has remained an enduring symbol of loyalty, righteousness, and martial bravery across East Asia.
After his tragic death, he was deified and became known as 关帝 Guandi (Emperor Guan) or 武圣 Wusheng (Saint of War) , China's equivalent of a patron saint for warriors.

Instantly recognizable by his red face, long beard, and legendary Green Dragon Crescent Blade, he is worshiped across Chinese culture in multiple roles: soldiers pray to him for victory, police see him as a protector, and businesses venerate him as a God of Wealth. His life story, especially the Oath of the Peach Garden with Liu Bei and Zhang Fei, is immortalized in the classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

In temples like Jieyang's Gurong Wu Miao, statues of Guan Yu often stand flanked by his adopted son Guan Ping and weapon-bearer Zhou Cang.

Temple & Woodcarving Caisson Ceiling

Built during the Ming Dynasty and continuously expanded over 400 years, this site is a masterpiece of Chaoshan craftsmanship . Listed as a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit (2013) , the temple is most famous for its exquisite wooden caisson ceiling, a multi-layered woodcarving that is considered a national treasure of art.
