Dating back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Hakka walled houses are remarkable examples of both defensive and communal neighborhood. Built by the Hakka people (migrants known for their strong clan identity), these structures were designed to protect entire families from bandits and conflicts.

In Guangdong, most memorable Hakka houses are mostly located in Meizhou. (See Hua'E Building)
However if you are traveling through Heyuan you'll also have the opportunity to visit stunning similar places.

Massive earthen or brick walls, enclosed courtyards, watchtowers, and single guarded entrances are the main characteristics of these architectural marvels. Inside, you will find a self-sufficient microcosm including living quarters, ancestral halls and storage spaces that all coexist within the fortified perimeter.

Nowadays these kind of places stand as a testament to Hakka culture, blending social order and architectural ingenuity.

Ancient Fortified Compounds

Clusters of large-scale walled houses can still be found across rural areas in Heyuan. Some of them are centuries old but still remain lively, offering a rare glimpse into traditional communal lifestyle.

Ancestral Halls

At the heart of each walled house lies an ancestral hall, where rituals, ceremonies, and clan gatherings take place highlighting the importance of lineage and respect for ancestors in Hakka culture.
